                  Wespack Employees Association
Vote Yes Twice To Join The IAM

IAM LL692 organizer David Knowles and LL11 member David Lau at a recent ,
information session prior to the Labour Relations Vote on December 13th.

After Wexxar employees were taken over from an International company,
concerns rose within the association of their ability to negotiate with such
a large employer. Meetings were held with representatives of District 250
who took the time to show the Wexxar employees what the IAM had to offer
including shop steward training sessions with executives of the association.
Executives were able to interact with shop stewards  from district 250
discussing issues that they face and how the collective power of the IAM is
able to overcome the challenges. Realizing the significant potential of
belonging to the IAM, an International Union and its affiliation with Unions
throughout North America the executive board began the internal process of
informing their association that it pays to join the IAM.
On September 20, 2006 the association voted in favor to join the IAM. When the
vote was rejected by the labour board, the IAM went to bat for the association
and had the board hold a vote, the results were an even greater support for the IAM
                        from the 42 new members.
Preparations for negotiations have already began as the collective agreement
expires on July 1st. The negotiation committee has been elected and collective
bargaining training sessions are in the plans for the negotiation committee.

This could not have been achieved without a collected effort from Local Lodges
IAM district 250 and of course the determination of the 42 new members.
It was the pulling together and the power of the collective that made this
happen, but after all that's what we are about !
