Labour Day In British Columbia Opens With A Rally
September 3, 2008
Since 1894 Labour Day has been a time to
acknowledge the working people of this province that have created a
community that we all appreciate today. On a day that is traditionally spent
with
our families and friends relaxing as summer nears another end, why would the
BC Federation
open such a day with a rally?. Throughout these last 150 years the Labour
Movement has had
to struggle for every gain they received, governments didn't decide to
provide statutory holidays workers demanded them. One only has to look at
countries like china (read more with photos)

LL 1857 Celebrate their 50th Anniversary
On July 19th LL 1857 celebrated their 50th anniversary at Campbell Valley Regional Park in Langley. A committee was formed to take care of the festivities which ran smoothly through out the day, great job
.A clown was hired (Scruffles) who kept all in amazement for the two hours he was there creating balloon items for young and old alike. IAM Auto Mechanic Dave Betker and his wife Trish spent most of the day cooking over the grill making sure everyone had
enough burgers while LL President Bill Macpherson issued tickets and took care of the raffle draws. A grand prize of two nights at whistler was awarded to 1857 member Bill McCullough. Thanks to all those who worked hard to make it a very successful day.

2008 CLC Convention Opens
CLC President Ken Greorgetti delivered
his opening address
To over 1,800 deligates (
May 29, 2008)
"When we last met The
President of the Ontario Federation of Labour was in Jail defending 100,000
manufacturing jobs and Mike Harris was the Premier of Ontario. Fast forward
to today, WE have gained a $10. minimum wage in Ontario and in BC a landmark
case was won ensuring workers rights to collective bargaining".
Every day we loose 150 manufacturing jobs as the work gets shipped out of
our country. Korea doesn't allow imported cars so why are we allowing them
to import their cars into Canada, we should be playing by the same rules.
The Harper government has removed equality language for women's rights,
currently women earn 70% less then men in Canada (in Unions its 93%) this
change in legislation is only going to make it worse.
When The CLC was formed in 1956 the goal was to build a better Canada
through the support of all affiliated Unions, the goal is no different today

Vote yes to a three Year
agreement
April 19,2008
After Rejecting the companies
first offer the Union once again met to reach an agreement, the main
outstanding issue was a real wage increase and pension improvements. The
company presented its final offer, this was far from the mandate of the
bargaining committee so the offer was not voted.
A strive vote was taken and this resulted in 90% in favor of strike, this
sent a clear message that the committee was determined to get a fair deal.
The committees agreed to meet and an offer was presented that the committee
was willing to recommend to the members. The results were
69% in favor of a new three year agreement that included improvements to
benefits,
5 personal time off days per year and a wage increase of 3% in
each year and 10 cents per year towards the pension plan.

District 250 Increases Reward to
$25 Per New Member
Do you know of a group of workers who need
representation? Employer treating them poorly? Wages and benefits
substandard? Job opportunities not handled in objective fashion? Favoritism
in the workplace creating dissension and unhappiness?
We have a solution for these employees:
Join the IAM!
And as an incentive for you as the member who provides the
contact information to us, there is a reward of $25.00 per working member
who is brought into the Union as a result of a successful organizing
campaign.
This program has paid dividends in the
past: a few years back, a member at Richmond Honda provided us with a
contact at another Honda DealershipVancouver Honda. After the Union
reached a successful contract with the Vancouver Honda owners, the IAM
member received a cheque for approximately $300.
And the greater benefit is that your friends, relatives, and
colleagues in non-Union workplaces can enjoy the benefits of Union
representation: fair wages, fair working conditions, and a voice in building
an equitable workplace.
Contact District 250 Organizers at

Union.
